The fourth-generation Fairlady Z (type Z32) debuted in July 1989 and transformed the previous model’s long nose/short deck style to a wide and low form.
A short wheelbase two-seater and long wheelbase “2 by 2” (2 plus 2 seating) were available. For both, two choices of engine were offered: a 3-liter V6 twin turbo type VG30DETT (280 ps) and the normal aspiration version type VG30DE (230 ps). The transmission was either a five-speed manual transmission (MT) or four-speed automatic transmission (AT). For the two-seater and “2 by 2”, Nissan offered either a normal (fixed) or T-bar (detachable) roof. Thus, customers could consider a wide variety of configurations before buying one.
Presented here is a one-off special Z32 completed in 1991 by JUN Automechanic, one of the premier tuning specialists. Using a two-seater twin turbo five-speed MT car, JUN Automechanic built this special with the aim of taking part in the Bonneville Speed Trials, a renowned top speed competition held in Utah, USA.
The engine capacity was increased to 3.1-liter, along with the complementary structure strengthening. Each bank was installed with a set of KKK turbine type K27.2 originally designed for Porsche Group C cars. The maximum power outputs were 900 ps at a turbo pressure of 1.8 kg/cm2 and over 1000 ps at 2.0 kg/cm2. A standard body was partially modified for the Trials. For example, the bulge at the center of the bonnet was enlarged to clear the significantly different outer form of the surge tank, which was to enhance the intake efficiency, and the one-off rear diffuser was installed to produce sufficient downforce to enhance high-speed stability. In the Bonneville Speed Trials, the car recorded a maximum speed of 261.932 mph (421.536 km/h), which significantly exceeded the previous class record. It became a legend for being assembled in Japan based on a domestic car and exceeding the 400 km/h barrier.
After returning to Japan, the current owner modified the car so that it could be legally used on public roads. Modifications included changing the final gear ratio to 3.5:1 from the ultrahigh gearing only feasible for the Speed Trial, but the engine itself remained basically the same as that used in the Trials. The JUN Bonneville Z32 is endowed with three virtues: a glorious history as a record holder, stratospheric speed, and being drivable on public roads. This is a rare car that demonstrates Japan’s world-class tuning technology.
